Another key choice that you need to make is when looking at the ever-popular AOC AGON brand. These give you two great models to choose from at 240Hz; the AGON AG251FZ and the AG251FG. While their names are a mere letter apart, the actual quality-based difference of both models can be quite hard to notice.
Both 24.5” in size and built using the same panels and to the same height and width, they are naturally quite tough to tell apart from one another. The main changes, really, are quite hard to spot for the layman. Both capable of 1920 x 1080 pixels Full HD and with 24-bit color quality, from the offset you might just want to concentrate entirely on the price. Both have identical pixel pitches and density with 89ppi. In fact, there is no real difference in terms of the display quality of both; outside of their names, it’s very hard to tell what is what!
Even frequencies and power usage options are identical. There is, in essence, very little difference when it comes to picking the choice between the AG251FZ and the FG. The main issue could be the pricing, with the AG251FZ well-priced at around the £400 range. The FG, though, can be way over the £400 mark depending on where you invest from.
One of the few differences comes in connections; for example, one uses extra ports as the FZ has access to extra display ports. It’s got a DVI dual link port, a D-sub and HDMI 2.0 ports instead of 1.4. However, the FG has access to the NVidia G-sync tech, which helps to make sure that your monitor matches up with the capacity of your graphics card for the most balanced and natural performance possible. If you do not use an NVidia GPU, though, then this does not make a great deal of difference.
Both, though, are very similar in terms of their specs and in terms of performance.

BenQ ZOWIE XL2546 / XL2540 Review
Next up on the list is the pair of BenQ ZOWIE XL models; the 2536(£400+) and the 2540(£350+). While both are very similar on the face of it, there are some differences that you need to think about. Both are an impressive 25” inches in size, and both give you a viewable area of around 24.5”. Some big differences so exist, though, which might go some way to determining what kind of investment you are likely to make.
For example, the XL2540 comes with adaptive V-sync, which the other does not. This is quite an interesting one, as it only takes place when a feature that is set on in the XL2546 – BenQ Blur Reduction – is switched to OFF. On the other model, it already arrives on. Sadly, if you never read about blur reduction tools you would never have used them; they aren’t mentioned anywhere.
Go into the service menus and you can switch it on. If you find that the image is increasingly blurry and/or you are getting screen tearing, then make this change to help make sure you get the design that you need. Also, it comes with an Overdrive gain setting that you should definitely use if you are looking for the best possible performance level.
The XL2546, though, is more or less the same idea as the above. A great piece of kit, it comes with the feature for blur reduction already switches on, meaning that you should see a big improvement just from that alone. Also, the XL2540 does not come with any strobe boosting at the back-end, which can be a bit of an issue unless you go in and turn on the DyAc feature mentioned above.
In terms of features, though? These are solid, well-respected monitors. By making sure you get a good and high-clarity vision when playing any game of your choice, the native 240Hz resolution on both will make a huge difference to the whole experience.
At the same time, they also both make use of the Shield function that helps to keep distractions to a minimum when you are gaming. Used right, this can make an absolutely stellar difference to performance and keep you well on the right path to progress.
While it can be tough to decide what you want to do in terms of what to go with, the safest option is to go with the one in your budget; they are both broadly similar.

Dell Alienware AW2518H / AW2518Hf Review
The AW2518H is a 240Hz piece of hardware, and is a very impressive piece of kit. Complete with full G-sync, this gives you a very impressive visual output at the other end. The 24.5” screen can give you a full 1920 x 1080 resolution, while giving you a VERY impressive 1ms response time.
At 240Hz, too, it’s got a hugely impressive level of performance and gives you a very bright, crisp and enjoyable screen. The 0.2825mm pixel pitch also makes sure you are left with a very impressive piece of kit to work with.
The AW2517Hf, though, is fully equipped with FreeSync which makes sure that the refresh rate is selected in full accordance with how your actual hardware operates. Your graphics card will have its own limits, remember, and FreeSync can help you to get just what you are looking for in terms of performance without forcing your hardware to operate outside of its native capacity.
However, the main difference with these models is the use of their sync capacity. It kind of comes down to personal choice – do you want G-sync, or FreeSync?
While both come with the full 240Hz refresh rate, full HD resolutions and a simple to work with TN-based panel, the difference is in the use of FreeSync and G-sync. Also, the AW2518H makes use of AlienX RGB lighting, an Alienware platform that makes a huge difference to visual quality and consistency. While both of the techs in both monitors will work to help better synch the refresh rate of the monitor to your graphics card, helping to minimize screen tearing and stuttering as much as is possible.
Really, then, the main challenge that you face is determining what you want to pay. While G-sync is more expensive in general, it’s hard to tell on most standard rigs how good the difference is. Most people will find that the variable nature of the FreeSync is more than worth going for.
Add in the fact it can be about £100 cheaper – sometimes more – then it becomes easier to make a choice in accordance with your actual budget; both choices, though, are high-spec. at around the £350+ range, this is one well-worth looking at.

Viewsonic XG2530 Review
The last monitor that we want to recommend to you is the impressive Viewsonic XG2530. While relatively expensive at over £400, it comes with a very good reputation for all manner of reasons. It’s capable of giving you a much crisper, clearer level of performance as you play. With a whopping 1ms response time and with a richer and more vibrant color output, few models can come close to matching up with the Viewsonic XG2530 at times.
With an experience that more or less eliminates the once commonplace screen tearing, the XG2530 looks to make a fine choice for those who value class, precision and performance all in the same category.
However, like everything, nothing is perfect here. The input lag can be improved upon with the XG2530, though it is by no means as bad as it can be on lesser-priced monitors. Visuals are massive with this thing, though, as it paints the most grandiose picture in front of you.
That being said, though, it’s not 4K. If you are used to the crystal clear imagery of a 1400p+ screen, then you might find that this is a bit of a downgrade for you. Pixel quality and sharpness s just as important in a high refresh rate, so it depends on what you are personally invested in.
We recommend that you take a closer look at the XG2530 if you want a good-quality, affordable high refresh rate monitor. If you are looking for incredible vision in 4K, though, this is not really the one for you.
The image is crisp and quality, but it’s not quite 4K. if you can live with that and enjoy the faster refresh rate than just about any affordable monitor, then this is almost certainly a fine choice to go with when you want quality, value and consistency.

As ever, the choice should be one that you can actually afford. Just about any 240Hz monitor worth buying is going to be over £300, though so make sure you are willing to invest the money into the product in the first place.
However, you should take the time that you need to better understand what your needs are. For those who are looking to buy a 240Hz monitor, make sure it is for the right reasons. It is for crisper graphics, going for a 4K screen might be more worthwhile.
If it is for faster performance and an edge in competitive gaming, though? It’s well worth the investment. Those extra half-seconds can be the difference between winning and losing a round. You, then, just need to decide if losing less is worth that investment for you; if it is, then don’t hesitate about buying a 240Hz monitor.
